I left Albuquerque and sped towards my next destination. This particular Sunday was quite exilarating. For on that night I would lay my head to rest in a wigwam. The Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, AZ was built in 1950 and is still run by the family of it's original owner. Vintage automobiles are placed on the grounds to give it a distinct "retro" feel. The wigwams... not "tepees", not "rooms"... still contain the original hickory furniture. In the office there is a museum of sorts containing the original owners' American Indian artifacts. One standout item was a necklace made of human teeth (of unknown origin). I was relieved to see no racist souvenirs in the gift shop. Years ago a friend of mine was on a Route 66 road trip and purchased a whiskey flask with an illustration depicting the proverbial "drunken Indian" Horrible stuff! I'm not sure if it was obtained in Holbrook but I half expected to find one. Actually there were no objectionable items at all. The place is a well preserved time capsule... classic kitsch! This was one of those non negotiable, must see attractions on my road trip.
